2011-12 Upper Deck Hockey Tin Box Break

A few months ago I bought a few packs of 2011-12 Upper Deck Hockey Series 1, and couldn't complete the set. I just grabbed a tin box at my local Walmart today. The box has 12 packs, and each pack contains 8 cards. Here are the highlights of the break.

1950's Hockey Heroes: Bobby Hull (HH4)

All-World Team: Jaroslav Halak (AW13)

EA Ultimate Team: Jonathan Toews (EA5)

UD Game Jersey: Seymon Varlamov (GJ-SV)

UD Canvas: Paval Datsyuk (C36) and Antti Niemi (C71)

Young Guns: Roman Horak, Paul Postma, Cody Hodgson

The Hodgson card, the most valuable in this box break, was in the last pack of the box.

Two 1998-99 UD Choice Hockey Box Break

I got two boxes of 1998-99 UD Choice Hockey from my local Wal-Mart. They were selling them 8$ each...

Each box has 36 packs. The main set has 310 cards.

Here are the odds:
- each pack has six cards
- you get two Starquest cards per pack
- Green Starquest 1:7 ; Red Starquest 1:11
- Choice Reserve 1:6
- Mini Bobbing-Head 1:4

Highlights from the first box
- 2 complete sets (30) of Blue Starquest
- 5 Green Starquest (Jagr, Yzerman, Belfour, Sundin, LeClair)
- 4 Red (Messier, Lindros, Mike Johnson, Amonte)
- 9 Bobbing-Head (Palffy, Kariya, Sundin, Messier, Blake, Robitaille, Forsberg, Hasek, Selanne)
- 12 Choice Reserve (two of them are actually interesting: Leetch #238 and Gretzky #225)
- notable cards from the main set

Well, I wasn't expecting much. It's not hard exceding in value the 8$ I  paid for the box. But most of all, it was fun. I wasn't collecting around these years, so these are actually my first cards from the 1998-99 season. Some pictures are... surprising, to say the least.

My only complaint concerns the cards as physical objects. The common cards seem to be sticky, and the Starquest cards are very fragile. I don't think I actually got one without any defect coming out of the pack. Also, most of them (they put the 2 Starquest cards per pack together) were almost glued together.

Highlights from the second box
- 5 Green Starquest (Fleury, Jagr, LeClair, Bondra, Elias)
- 3 Red (LeClair, Samsonov, Elias)
- 9 Bobbing-Head (Shanahan, Koivu, Modano, Sakic, Roy, Yzerman, Fleury, Samsonov, Bure)
- 12 Choice Reserve (the most interesting ones are Jagr #226, Gretzky #236 and Yzerman #310)
- notable cards from the main set (Gretzky, Roy, Yzerman, Sedin brothers with Junior team)

Once again, I feel like I got more than what I paid for, which is always a good thing... Plus, the packs and cards were in better shape, so the cards - especially Starquest cards - are fresher.

I'll put some pictures.

1951/52 Laval Dairy Hunt

Lately, I've got my hands on a few cards from the 1951-52 Laval Dairy set from the Quebec Senior League.

Most people have an idea of what the most famous set from this season - the Parkhurst one - looks like. Even though the Laval Dairy set is black and white, the photography is crisper than the Parkhurst set.

Laval Dairy included in this 109 set cards of future NHL stars (Jean Beliveau, Jacques Plante).

So far, I have 23 cards from this set, for a 21% completion.

Prices paid include shipping. Total = 39.95$

World Junior Championships Alumni Set

I recently got my hands on a 15 cards set from 1994-95 called World Junior Championships Alumni Set. Since I couldn't find a lot of information on it on the Internet, I thought I'd give some here.

First of all, the set was only sold in the Canadian province of Alberta in Esso gas stations between December 20, 1994 and January 4, 1995. That year, the WJC were held in Red Deer in Alberta. Basically, these sets were sold during the tournament time frame. They came complete for 2.99 $ with a purchase of gas. The proceeds were sent to minor hockey.

The design is reminiscent of the one used for the WJC cards in the 1993-94 Upped Deck set, specially for the fonts used.

#2. Manny Legacé

#5. Paul Kariya

This is the best card in the set. Paul Kariya announced his retirement this week. He ends his career with 989 points in 989 NHL Reg. Season games.

#12. Scott Niedermayer

And here is an example of the back of the cards.

I uploaded the pictures of every card at this address, should you want to see all 15 cards.

Hockey Card Day in Canada Autographs

I thought I'd write something about it since the information about the autographed cards weren't in the Upper Deck press release earlier this year.

Hockey Card Day returned for another year on February the 12th. The typical set has 15 cards:

Rookies: Talor Hall, Tyler Seguin, Jeff Skinner, Jordan Eberle and P.K. Subban.
Pride: Jason Spezza, Dion Phaneuf, Jarome Iginla, Roberto Luongo and Sidney Crosby.
Heroes: Patrick Roy, Mario Lemieux, Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky.

These cards were found in 5-card packs they were giving out on that day. Each pack also contained a Checklist promoting the then-upcoming Heritage Classic game between the Montreal Canadiens and the Calgary Flames.

If you bought a Upper Deck product on that day, you would receive a special card featuring Jonathan Toews holding the Stanley Cup.

Autographs
Some packs also contained some autographed cards of Taylor Hall, Sidney Crosby and Bobby Orr. The autos were made on stickers.

The only information I could get was off eBay sellers. Here are the priced that were asked when I wrote this article:

Hall: 300-500 $
Crosby: 250-425 $
Orr: 300 $

It's hard to tell how much of each were made, since they're not numbered like the Crosby auto from the 2010 Hockey Card Day.

1992/93 UD Hockey High Series Box Break

Here is a summary of the box break.

Packs per box: 36
Cards per pack: 15
Cards per box: 540
Low Series (440) completion: 185 (42%)
High Series (200) completion:146 (73%)
Doubles: 151
Triples: 43
Quadruples: 5
Quintuple: 1

Inserts
4 Calder Candidates (1:9)
4 Gordie Howe Heroes (1:10)
1 SP Junior World Champions (1:81)

Key Rookie Cards
Paul Kariya (x3)
Chris Pronger
Saku Koivu
Manny Legace
Jere Lethinen

Notes
  • I didn't get any Ameri/Can-Rookie Team hologram, even though the odds of pulling one were of 1:25.
  • Without surprise, the collation had some issues. It's disappointing when you pull two Brian Bellows cards in the same pack. But I was fortunate enough to pull two Paul Kariya rookie cards out of the same pack.
  • Each pack had at least 2 or 3 themed cards. Those are the Young Guns, the World Junior Championship cards and the Profiles cards. It looks as if they weren't added at the same time than the rest of the cards, so they always ended up being together on one side of the pack. However, the Calder Candidate and Gordie Howe Heroes cards I got were always in the middle of the pack.
  • Some packs had small pieces of paper from the cutting process.

Two things about this card. First, the background is supposedly some kind of prank. I just can't confirm this information though. Second, Ramage's story is a sad one, as the man was convicted to four years in jail for getting a friend killed in a drunk driving car accident.

Pack #11
80: Benoit Brunet
Loved him as a player, even though he had a lot of injuries. He was the analyst for the Montreal Canadiens games on RDS for the past few years but just lost this job. The quality of his spoken French language was criticized a lot in the Quebec media. Some people though his in-game analysis was too generic.

340: Andrei Nikolishin (Russian Stars)
406: Scott Niedermayer (Star Rookies)

526: Peter Ahola
582: Sergei Krivokrasov (Young Guns)
585: Manny Legace (WJC) RC
587: Alexandre Daigle (WJC) RC

This used to be THE card. In that set anyway. I don't remember how much it was worth, but he was basically surrounded by the same kind of hype that Eric Lindros had. When I think about this card, I always thought a tool presenting the value of cards over the years (or months) would be great to see how it evolves. Such a tool should also take into account the differences in the cost of life.

Got a 1992-93 Upper Deck Hockey Series II Box

For my brithday a few months ago, my brothers gave me a gift certificate to a local store. I didn't have much time to think about what I was going to get, so I waited a while.

I went there the other day I saw that they had just gotten old hockey card boxes. They had two boxes of 1992-93 Upper Deck Hockey Series II. That's the box with Gordie Howe on it. The packs are made of golden foil.

When I was young, I was able to complete the Series I set, and started the second set. But I couldn't complete it. Honestly, I have very precise memories of me and one of my brothers sitting on the floor in the bedroom we were sharing, trying to complete the whole set.

We liked this set for many reasons:
- we thought the inserts were cool (Euro-Stars, Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe special subsets, holographic cards)
- the set had a lot of mini sets included in it, like trophy winners, world juniors, star rookies, young guns, paintings, etc.
- it had THE card every card wanted: the Alexandre Daigle rookie.
